Meet Elena

With support from the WISH Program, Elena enjoys a happy and healthy life rich with engaging relationships and hobbies.

Elena’s Story: A proud mother of four and grandmother of 14, Elena, a client of the WISH program, smiles and shares that she lives a very happy and fulfilling life. Elena has known her share of health concerns. She is 79 years old and lives with diabetes, arthritis, vision, muscular and nerve issues. Thanks to the support and care she receives from her WISH coach, Elena still manages to be active and engaged in the things she loves!

Elena became a participant of the WISH Program in the spring of 2018. Elena’s eyes lights up when she describes how her Health Coach, Zarqa, has come to feel like a family member to her in this short time. “[My Health Coach] Zarqa is so sweet. She does a very nice job and has helped me with so many things. I am used to people not showing up, but my Coach is there for me when I need her.”

As a participant in the WISH Program, Elena receives regular in-home visits from Zarqa to address the health challenges she faces. When Zarqa first met Elena, she became concerned that Elena’s health conditions put her at risk for potentially dangerous falls. In order to address her fall risk, Zarqa arranged for a home safety assessment and coordinated therapy and in-home nursing services for Elena to keep her healthy and safe.

Elena has been living in her apartment home for three years and she enjoys the activities available to her in her building. When she is not spending time with her family, she enjoys a variety of pastimes, including sewing, bingo, going on walks and listening to music. “I am very happy in this area. The scenery is nice for walking, shopping and getting around with transportation.” In addition to staying active through her hobbies, Elena gives back to her community as an Ambassador for Hispanic individuals in her area.

Elena says that her involvement with the WISH Program has improved her health and happiness, and she shares that she often encourages her friends and neighbors to consider participating in the program, as well. “This program just helps you so much with everything. I am very happy in my life now and I thank God for being alive. I don’t know what will happen tomorrow, but I am thankful for today.”
